The Utopians News

By Adok/Hugi

The Utopians News was the newsletter of the international demoscene organization "The Utopians". It was edited by the President of The Utopians, Zippy. Only one issue of this newsletter was ever released. It can be downloaded from scene.org.

The text file of the newsletter issue 1 has a size of about 46 kb. Attached is an infofile of The Utopians, which is a 13-kbyte text file. Let's first talk about this infofile and what The Utopians were: Zippy founded The Utopians to establish a contact-network of newcomers and experienced sceners. The seven goals of The Utopians were:

1. Keep the demoscene alive.

2. Make the demoscene a place for genuine friendship.

3. Make demos works of art. Not simply 'showing off computers and coders'.

4. Create a tolerant demoscene.

5. Encourage progress, while preserving the oldskool-style.

6. Recruit fresh demosceners.

7. Protect it against becoming the 'getting into the games-industry'-scene.

There were several sections inside The Utopians, including management, demo-making, knowledge exchange and swappers. At the time the newsletter was released, The Utopians had 22 members from various countries (Norway, Sweden, Slovenia, USA, Portugal, Austria, Israel, Italy, New Zealand and others).

The newsletter contained eight articles. The editorial counts for one article, as well as the member list. In the third article, Blade presented his idea of a Utopian Database Project, something we'd call a demoscene history-related wiki nowadays. There were two articles from Hugi #11, written by me, about the question whether demos are the art of the 21st century and the role of diskmags in the PC scene. Moreover, there were two coding tutorials, dealing with Julia and Mandelbrot fractals, and with triangle filling. The final article was called "Important Messages" and was a kind of FAQ.

Quite an interesting read!
